What are the settings, not private ones obviously, I'm using Turnpike
but I think Thunderbird can get usenet as well.

I can't help with Turnpike or Thunderbird Mike.

Using MesNews here, your login name and password are needed for
authentication and the port is 119, no SSL/TLS needed. That's it as
far as MesNews settings.

This is from the website
https://www.eternal-september.org/index.php?showpage=techinfo
I am using the first settings, never tried the second and third.

Client Settings
Server name: news.eternal-september.org
Port : 119 (NNTP)
Port : 563 (encrypted connection NNTPS)

Servername: reader80.eternal-september.org
Port : 80

Servername: reader443.eternal-september.org
Port : 443 (encrypted connection NNTPS)

The number of concurrent connections to the server is limited to 4

I seem to remember many years ago when I first started, ES showed about
half a dozen newsgroups at start up, then you had to download all the
other news groups from the server which was a bit obscure to a newbie
like me.

Yes, I use Thunderbird. Under Settings for ES I've got:

Port 119
Connection security: None

Check for new messages at startup - Tick
Check for new messages every 30 minutes - Tick
Ask me before downloading more than 500 messages - Tick
Always request authentication when connecting to this server - Tick

Mike
I am using Thunderbird, and I have user name and password access
control. To do this I have ticked "Always request authentication when
connecting to this server"

My settings are:
Server name: news.eternal-september.org
Port: 563
Connection Security: SSL/TLS
Default Encoding: Unicode (UTF-8)

For the outgoing server I have left it as "Use default" and that works
OK for me.

Didn't work.

Setup account in Thunderbird, couldn't send messages but could receive.

Couldn't work out how to add groups.

Life's too short to struggle, paid my €10 to Berlin.

Thanks everyone for trying to help.

If you have the patience it may still be worth setting up ES as a
"spare". Did you ever register and get an email from them with settings
and, I think, a password?

Yes, registered and got the email with 3 options, I will keep trying to
set things up but without the loss of news groups at the end of March.

To see the list of newsgroups and subscribe, I right-click on
news.eternal-september.org in the left-hand folders pane and then click
on subcribe. That brings up a list of newsgroups.

To send messages, you need to select FollowUp, not reply in Thunderbird
(which I'm always forgetting). Used to be Reply Group which was more
intuitive. New Message works for a new thread

I've never even noticed Followup to Newsgroup before. I always
right-click on a message and select Reply to All.
