Discussion:
Speaking of VM email...how long will they still profide it?

I was just reading the BBC news story about the VM email outage
and came across this little gem that caused me a "wait...what?"
moment.

"Virgin Media email is no longer available to new customers,
but many existing customers still rely on it for work."

When did this happen?

That one shocked me as well, never informed about that one.

I can only assume that they will allow email to slowly whither on the
vine and eventually reach a trigger point where enough legacy customers
with email accounts have left and then they give us notice of withdrawal
of email service. That's a bummer!

Most of my email is on my own domain, but @blueyonder is the contact
address for my domain, eg if that messes up or something.

So, no webspace, no Usenet and eventually no email. VM will be a
simple utility with no added value, just a pipe to the internet.

I guess the kids don't use email anymore. It's WhatFaceTwit now.
Those few that do know that email exists probably use gmail 'cos
that's the only one they've heard of.

If it gets ditched, I'll cancell and go to community fiibre with its
symmetrical up load and download speeds, since its the continuity of email
that keeps me here. I'm loathe to use Google, I have one of them, and often
the eternal 2 factor messing about has made a simple client config, much
more complicated. I never really trust Yahoo, and as for Microsoft Outlook,
that too can be a pain. I simply do not get this online email current fad. I
want pop3 so an auto filter puts my email where I want it to go.

This document should only be read by those persons for whom Paranoia is
normal
and its contents are probably boring and confusing. If you receive this
e-Mail
message in error, do not notify the sender immediately, instead, print it
out and make
paper animals out of it. As the rest of this disclaimer is totally
incomprehensible, we have not bothered to attach it.

So get a hosted domain for email. They can be cheap, have a shop
around and see what's available.

How their sites and management pages will respond to your screen
reader is something I can't comment on though.

That was news to me too.

When I joined what became Virginmedia but was called Telewest then, I
was allocated a blueyonder email address and that was my name for my
Personal Webspace (which I used). Then when Telewest became
Virginmedia, I was offered a tempter that I could have more Webspace if
I had a @virginmedia address, so I registered for one, though I still
used the blueyonder one for my normal address. I use it for occasional
emails just to keep it alive, but they tend to be unimportant recipients.

In time the personal webspace was withdrawn so I had to get a "paid for"
webspace from a commercial company and I started to get cold feet about
taking VM's offerings for granted so I set up a yahoo email for my PSP
contents to link to. Then the Newsgroups facility was withdrawn and
again I had to go elsewhere and setting that up required an e-mail
address so I set up a Gmail one for that. I thought two non-VM addresses
gave belt and braces.

I have just checked and just over 300 people only have my blueyonder
address so I don't relish the job of telling all of them a new e-mail
address if the facility gets withdrawn. But at least I have a couple of
alternatives already created.

I would advise anybody who found real problems from the recent outage to
seriously consider setting up a non-VM fallback.

I started with Demon and when I left for the then Cabletel I lost all my
email addresses.

I was a bit green back then so did a bit of searching and decided to buy
a domain.

I chose 123 Reg, i've been with them for years and never had a problem.

In the event of VM shutting down email I can find someone else and just
alter the new email names to intercept them to my domain address.

Ah, do they provide client based email collection though? I need that as
I've been pissed about by webmail interface changes just once too often. I
guess you can get what you like if you pay the dosh.

If you get a hosted domain, yes, the primary way to get your email
from the servers is pop3 or imap. Most will also have a webmail
interface too, if you choose to use it but that's not normally
marketed as a primary function.

I really have not heard of this, What would be the point. After all they
could easily piggy back email from another providor at minimal cost. It
would take very very long to set up a whole lot of new ones as everyone has
the original ones. They do still ask you one the phone about your default
email address.
