The end of an era, this and Turnpike are the only news groups I
subscribe to and both are devoid of posts these days.

My Berlin subs are due at the end of the month, they are only €10 but
what's the point as Usenet is dead in the water.

I've had some wonderful times posting and meeting ULY contributors over
the years but all good thing come to an end so it's,

Goodbye and thanks for all the fish.

Usenet is not quite dead Mike, I'm still lurking around ;-)
I still subscribe to about a dozen newsgroups that are very active and
thankfully devoid of trolls and spammers most of the time.

Agreed, things move on as the years pass by, but no, Usenet still has
its place for those who want to have an informative and easy to follow
discussion on a topic that internet forums can never achieve with their
disjointed posting. Google Groups ceased to be a few days ago and I
was surprised by how many people from there were seeking advice on the
best Usenet servers. In my experience though I have never met anyone
under fifty that has ever heard of Usenet.

Although now getting on a bit I'm not about to join the younger ones
with their "eyes-glued-to-their-phone" wanting likes for every word
they say and things they do, nor trying to be the latest 'influencer'
spouting total garbage on Thick-Tok. No thanks, Usenet is the way to
go!

Oh dear, I feel like I'm having a rant but I do sometimes wonder in
what direction we are going and what the future holds for the
non-influenced.

Goodbye and thanks for all the fish.
What Mick said :-)

Still lurking here, but also subscribed to a number of
less quiet NGs with active posters and minimal trolling.

I still prefer newsgroups because I don't have to use an
active email address to subscribe to a group, unlike all
other web forums, "apps", etc.

Don't feed the trolls. You might catch something nasty.

.....or when asking for instant help your perfectly normal, innocent,
non-blasphemous, non-racist post is held up 24 hours from being
published because some self righteous appointed moderator needs to
check it first.

I'm still around too. Although I haven't posted in this group for some
time it is in my list of watched groups, hence finding this thread.

If you want a free text-only newsgroup server (which will be cheaper
than the subs you have been paying) then try eternal-september
https://www.newsgroupreviews.com/eternal-september.html
It is what I am using.

Usenet isn't dead but it is very unwell.
Some of the groups I was subscribed to are full of Span or troll posts.
But some (just enough) are still full of posters who actually post and
discuss things (of course proper kill files help).

Even at 10 euros, seems a bit expensive, for maybe half a dozen (usable)
groups.
Just get a free account at (say) Eternal-September, as it is free
you do not feel you have to use this service all the time, you can just
pop in now and again. ...and when you do you can post erudite and to the
point posts. :O)

Yes, Eternal-September is the way to go.

When Virgin discontinued newsgroups in June 2021 I bought a 1TB block
at Newsdemon for £5.57 just for the binary groups that are not
available on ES. I thought that it would last me perhaps a year. I
have actually used 176GB as of today, so still 824GB left!

I did have a look at Newsdemon site today, 1TB today is $87 about £60,
wow! A 10Gb block is $2, or 25GB for $5, which would last ages for
text only newsgroups.

I might give ES a go as the groups seem to have woken up, I've never had
the desire or need for a binary group.
